  • Recipe: Brown Julien v1

This is my first brewing of this specific recipe. I didn't quite hit my target gravities and am not 100% confident in the numbers I have recorded. I consistently read .002 to .004 high with both tap water and with distilled water using two different hydrometers. I believe these numbers I have here have been shifted down to account for that.

I will continue to tweak this recipe, but this version of it is not bad and has been well received by friends. It is a bit sweeter and heavier on the caramel 80 than I intended. I will probably do this again with the caramel 80 and caramel 40 amounts reversed and go with chocolate malt or maybe even a tiny bit of black malt to increase the roastiness and chocolate/coffee bitterness just a bit.

Update 2020-09-27

After finishing the keg last night and having had several people with good things to say about this beer, I may not tweak it further at all. I was thinking to get it a bit roastier, but I have had porter fans complement how easy to drink this keg was and even a friend who does not like porters had 4-6oz and say that he could drink this one.
